International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings 2014
The Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the meeting of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) were held in Washington, DC, on 10-12 October. Már Guðmundsson, Governor of the Central Bank of Iceland and Iceland’s representative to the Board of Governors of the IMF, attended the meetings. The Nordic-Baltic Constituency’s speech for the Annual Meeting was delivered by Bank of Finland Governor Erkki Liikanen. The Constituency’s representative on the IMFC was Finnish Minister of Finance Antti Rinne.
On this occasion, Governor Guðmundsson met with Fund staff and with representatives of international financial institutions and credit rating agencies. He also attended an IMF conference on the future of the financial system and a meeting of the Group of Trustees of the Principles for Stable Capital Flows and Fair Debt Restructuring, of which he is a member.
Discussions within the IMFC and at related meetings touched on the uncertainty and lack of confidence in the future that are still hindering investment and output growth. According to the communiqué from the IMFC, the global economy continues to recover, but output growth is uneven and generally weaker than previously expected. The Committee expressed its commitment to stimulating demand and removing supply constraints through macroeconomic policy and structural reforms. Emphasis was also placed on promoting financial stability and fiscal sustainability.
